Our Story

This is a community aimed at making less of the "traditional lawn" and more of a garden/fun/pollinator friendly/still usable yard. We tend to focus on native planting and resource conservation.  We enjoy showing off how we took a boring grassy lawn and turned it into a beautiful beneficial yard.

Are we activists? Kind of. We're active in our own yards, doing our best to bring the birds and bees back to our communities. We're active on Reddit showing off our plans and getting advice. And yes, some of us are activists for conservation, preservation, and other environmentally friendly ways.

About Us

Our History

We started on Reddit and we're slowly growing outside of Reddit. You'll see a lot of references to our reddit page. Our movement started when a Reddit user named u/Suuperdad made a comment that struck u/GreatWhiteBuffalo41 into making a Sub all about lawn alternatives. We added users u/dat_dog_doe, u/emma20787 and u/TriniTornado as our first 2 mods and built the sub to 100,000 followers over 3 years. It was then we added u/robsc_16, CharlesV_ and u/IchTanze who have quite a bit of knowledge and education in all kinds of environmental fun.

We have expanded past Reddit onto discord as well as the Slrpnk Instance of Lemmy.

Our current goals are to keep growing and educating our community and to branch out beyond Reddit.

We Don't Always Have the Answers

We're not perfect, we don't have all the answers, and we don't always know exactly what we're talking about but, we do our best.  We have tons of resources in our wiki and we highly encourage you to talk to any experts in your area to get the best advice possible.  Stopping at your local nurseries or, talking to your local garden club can be great resources for finding out more information on your exact location, climate, and zone.
